Group Dental


Dental benefits are often a priority for employees.  While dental plans remain largely unchanged since 1960, several new trends and benefits are emerging to add polish to employer-sponsored plans.   
 
Dental plans may include:

  • Flexibility in choosing deductibles, coinsurance and benefit maximums
  • Orthodontic coverage
  • Annual maximums that accrue and carry over to new maximums
  • Preventive services that are not assessed to the annual maximum
  • Family maximums, rather than individual, that allows for when one family member needs more dental services than others
  • Alternative funding arrangements: base plans with a “buy-up” feature, or self-funding

Benefit plan types:

DHMO (Dental Health Maintenance Organization) – this type of plan, also known as "capitation plan", operates like a medical HMO.  It provides a comprehensive dental care to enrolled patients through designated dentists.

PPO (Dental Preferred Provider Organization) – a dental PPO allows a particular group of patients to receive dental care from a defined panel of dentists.  The participating dentist agrees to accept the contracted fee set by the insurance company.  If the patient chooses to see a dentist who is not designated as a "preferred provider", that patient may pay a greater share of dental expenses.

Indemnity Plan – a type of dental plan where you choose your own dentist. The dental insurance company pays the dentist on a traditional fee-for-service basis.  An insurance company usually pays 50% to 100% of the dentist fees for covered procedures and the client pays the remaining percentage.  Oftentimes a deductible is included in this type of plan.
